K.PYTHACUNTHAPUSERECTUS - VOODOO JU JU OBSESSION 7" - JU JU RECORDS (BARCLAY) I can't pronounce the name either. Even though i've had a copy of this record for years now i still don't know too much about it, apparently its quite popular with our neighbours across the channel. What drew me to this 45 - apart from the name - was the distribution label (Barclay records) - tha featured luminaries the like of Gong and The Mighty smoke - and that instead of seeing African names on the records - the name that came up was that of Janko Nilovic. A TRIBUTE TO DISCO STRUT - MIX BY MR. WONDERFUL - RECORDED JUNE 09 Disco comps are not renowned for their unique track listings, the either have the same Roy Ayers or Marvin Gaye tracks. The Disco Strut compilation collection is one of those very few exceptions to that very unimaginative rule - The comp is so good there's actually a comp of it. I first heard of Disco Strut from Billy Goods (Boogaloo assassins / Funkmosphere) - and with a name like Disco Strut you possibly don't expect much from the record, when you see the record sleeve you expect nothing more than the worst a disco comp has to offer - but then listening to it, and the old saying of never judging a book suddenly begins to ring true - firstly because there aren't that many disco tracks on the comp (mainly boogie and modern soul), and the quality of some of the tracks are up there with the best the genre of music has to offer. There are five parts to the collection, and they are not that easy to come across. When you do get to find one you could pay anything from £10.00 - £40.00 for it, the reason for the prices is not just because of the rarity of the comp itself, but the rarity of some of the tracks on it - some tracks on it were never even released - So, as a tribute to Disco Strut I've decided to do two, one hour mixes. Part one features tracks from Disco Strut 2 & 4 and part two will feature tracks from 1 & 3. summer friendly

EDAN (THE HUMBLE MAGNIFICENT) - RADIO SHOW MIX - RECORDED MARCH 2009 Anytime I get into one of those banal conversations about how dead Hip Hop is and which rappers are still keeping it real, the name Edan (echoooo) keeps popping up. Anyway enough twinklyeyed chat about Edan, We've got a copy of his first ever radio show, with him displaying his knowledge - recorded in March this year. Don't know how many of you have heard this, if you have you know it's definitely worth listening to again, if you haven't well - we haven't let you down yet and we are not about to begin now - you will be moving to this till the last second. If you're a fan of Edan you know what to expect, (Lord Finesse, Gun etc) The best two hours you've spent in a long time.

TIM WESTWOOD SHOW - RECORDED SOMETIME IN THE 80'S Don't let anybody tell you other wise this guy is a legend, he's influence on hip hop in the UK cannot and should not be sneered at. He's worked with 45king for Christ sake. I remember many a time (eon's ago) listening to Tim Westwood in a dark room and writing down the name of tracks and artists that i have never heard of and going out the next day to buy those records in Archway and Camden town - when they still had record stores - that was in the early and mid 90's - this show was recorded in the 80's and when i first heard this recently I saw my self doing what I did when I listened to his shows as a yoot. Get ready for schooling from a master - a true master. Hope you get as much pleasure from this as I did - - enjoy

Refreshing to know that in the UK there are still musicians like Stevie creating incredible music and there are labels like Eglo that are prepared to release their work. Unless you've had cotton wool in your ears for the past few months the chances are that you have heard of Eglo records and their array of talent (Fatima, Floating Points, Alex Nut, etc) either in conversation or on radio. Funkineven 1956 (Stevie J) is the latest member of the fam. West London (Ladbroke Grove) is where he resides, space is home and his home clearly influences his music. Fusing fusion, House, Hip Hop, Boogie, Jazz and all other groove laden genres of music his stuff is alien to many an untrained ear, the universe is his oyster - a real planet jumper. There's a couple bangin tracks of his currently available for download, this is one of them Funkineven 1956 - Mad Swing Watch this space for more on Funkineven

INCOGNITO - PARISIENNE GIRL 7"- 1980 - ENSIGN The second feature on our Great Britain not Rubbish Britain segment is the Incognito track - Parisienne girl. This was their first ever release - I think, and it features on their first album Jazz Funk released the following year. One of the fore fathers of the whole acid jazz movement, Bluey and co are still doing their thing till this day and have more band members than I've had cold breakfasts - including Jocelyn Brown (Read more and listen to track)

MADLIB LIVE SET KCRW RADIO - RECORDED 2001 In our recent newsletter we said that we had a rare live set by Madlib on KCRW radio, well we just found out that this is also posted on the Stones Throw website - so not exactly rare if you are a Stones Throw fan. It's Madlib doing what he does best, and was done as part of the promotion for the Yesterdays New Quintet drop Angles without Edges. Jazz, Fusion, Folk Rock and some of Jay Dee's finest. It may sound dated for those who follow Madlib like Hawks - but classic tracks will always be classic tracks and there are some Killahs on here.

THE HOLLIES - FOR CERTAIN BECAUSE (1966) CLOWN - PARLOPHONE - RON RICHARDS Let's be totally honest the Hollies were a paupers Beatles - a very poor pauper, and as far as I am concerned got even worse after Graham Nash left to join David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Neil Young (to a certain extent) to form the legendary Crosby, Stills and Nash. However their fifth album "For certain because" - (released as Stop! Stop! Stop! in the States) was their first dabble into the realm of psychedelic music, and of all their albums that I've heard- and trust me I've heard a few - This is the one that stands out. Overall the album is still pretty pop-py in keeping with their squeaky clean / sugary sweet image, but a couple of tracks do stand out "suspicious look in your eyes" is a beautiful 60's pop tune, the track "Clown" on the other hand is not what you'd expect to hear on the album. I can possibly imagine during writing the album they decided "ok guys i think we should play it a little bit risque at least for one track just to show we can also fit into this whole psychedelic movement that's all the craze" - which explains why the track is only two and a bit minutes long - the shortest and best track on the album. It starts with some circus like music and then Bobby Elliot comes in on drums with a beautiful kick start, with either Allan Clarke or Nash on vocals - the rest of the track then carries on at the same pace it's almost like an interlude or skit in the album but with beautiful vocals and simple yet brilliant lyrics.
